Who I am
I am a journalist and researcher covering humanitarian crisis around the globe, including refugee crisis in Europe and the Middle East, as well as the consequences of the austerity cuts in southern Europe and specifically in Greece, my country of origin.
I studied History and Archaeology in Greece and modern History in France. I hold a master degree in environmental studoes and a PhD in Anthropology from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris, France). From 2004 to 2009 I was a lecturer of Anthropology at the Department of Mediterranean Studies at the University of the Aegean (Greece) and at the Department of Cultural studies at the University of Western Australia (Perth).
I report and analyze on issues such as poverty, marginalization of the poor, drug use, people displaced by conflict, refugees and many more. I have worked for IRIN Asia and West Africa, Al Jazeera, the Spiegel, Huffington Post UK, the Guardian Development Network, the development analysis Devex and contributed in materials published by Universities (such as the Feinstein International Center of Tufts University), also UN agencies and Aid Organizations. I have worked for the UN and other international agencies as Communications Specialist and consultant in the Philippines, Thailand, Laos, Nigeria, Jordan.
From June 2012 to March 2014 I lived and worked in DPRK (North Korea) . This resulted to the book “In the Land of Kim- two years in North Korea” that was published in Greek in December 2016 and is already in its fourth edition
From July to December 2015 I lived and worked in Northeast Nigeria reporting on the Boko Haram conflict.
In December 2015, together with my colleague, photographer Stylianos Papardelas we filmed, researched and produced the web interactive documentary Eternal Present on the living conditions of the Syrian refugees in Jordan (Irbid Governorate and Zaatari camp). This research was conducted for Al Jazeera and Greek state TV.
